This ring is based on a find from Colmar, France, from the 14th century. The original was in gold with a sapphire and was part of the famous Colmar treasure, which was found in 1863 when a workman tore down a wall in an old house in the Jewish quarter of Colmar in Alsace. The hoard consists of around 50 silver objects – mainly jewelry – as well as around 300 coins and is believed to have been hidden by Jewish residents during the Black Death outbreak of 1348–1349, when Jews in Colmar, as in many other European cities, were accused of spreading the disease, which led to violent persecutions. It was probably hidden in an attempt to protect the valuables from confiscation or destruction. After the treasure was hidden for centuries, it was bought in 1923 by the Musée de Cluny in Paris, where today it is almost completely preserved and can be viewed!
Made of sterling silver 925.
