This pendant is based on a discovery from the 9th century, found in a silver hoard in Östergötland (Hagebyhöga). It is widely believed to depict Freyja.
Freyja was the goddess of love and fertility in Norse mythology, and she protected mothers and children. She was often associated with cats and was said to travel in a chariot pulled by cats. Freyja also had a darker side and was the goddess of both life and death. Her twin brother was the fertility god Freyr.
The original was made of silver and is now housed in the Stockholm Historical Museum.
