This heart-shaped ring is based on a medieval Italian model from the 14th century. Originally, the piece was crafted in gold with an inset ruby. In our version, we have chosen a pink mother-of-pearl instead.
On the underside of the original, the inscription “CORTE PORT AMOR” was engraved, which translates from Latin to “courtship leads to love” or alternatively “the heart gives you love.” Although heart-shaped brooches and pendants were relatively common during the Middle Ages, heart-shaped rings were uncommon. The original is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and can be seen here: link.
