Medieval ring Ri-50 silver

kr435.00

Categories: , ,

This ring is inspired by a medieval gold ring from England, likely made during the 14th century, although the find is dated to the period 1375-1425. The original piece was made of gold with an inset wolf’s tooth. Inside the ring, there were two inscriptions.

The first inscription was a magical formula: ‘BURO + BERTO + BERNETO’, believed to have been intended to protect against toothache. Although it is uncertain whether the original ring had an inset wolf’s tooth, that’s how it was found. Possibly, someone later added the tooth to reinforce the significance of the magical formula.

The second inscription was a biblical phrase: ‘CONSUMMATUM + EST’, which were the last words uttered by Christ on the cross and were believed to have the power to calm storms.

The original is now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and can be viewed here: link.
