This pendant originates from a silver treasure dated to the 9th century and found in Närke. The original, made of silver and in the same size as this piece, is now housed at the Historical Museum in Stockholm. There are several finds of pendants with intertwined serpents, although they were often simpler in design, such as being cut from silver sheet. These serpent pendants likely held symbolic significance, perhaps as guardians.
