This type of brooches was worn in the same manner as tortoise brooches. These are based on a find from Birka.

Tongue-shaped brooches serve as an alternative to tortoise brooches. They are typically about ten centimeters long, but may be slightly smaller. They are rare, but we know of at least four Swedish finds, at least two of which are from Björkö/Birka. Two of them have geometric figures and two have animal ornamentation. Sometimes, rings are attached to facilitate the hanging of pearl strings below. ISL341017 is also a beautiful Icelandic find.
