This fitting is inspired by a Viking-age bag found in the burial ground of Röstahammaren near Lake Storsjön in Jämtland. It was used as a decoration on the lid of the bag.
The bag was discovered in the wealthiest male grave, MIV, and can be dated to the latter half of the 9th century. The man was buried in a stone cairn along with a horse and a dog. He wore the belt with the bag and had with him, among other things, a silver-inlaid sword and spear, an axe and shield, horse equipment, a balance scale, and hunting arrowheads made of iron and horn. A fragment of an Arabic silver coin, minted around 943/44 AD, provides an indication of the burial’s timing.
The original bag is now housed at the Historical Museum in Stockholm. See: link
The fitting is made of bronze and equipped with four cast-in rivets on the back for easy and stable attachment. The inner hole measures approximately 14 x 8 mm.
