Viking ear-spoon Br-99

kr320.00

This ear spoon is based on a finding from grave Bj507 at Birka. The original is now housed at the Historical Museum in Stockholm and can be seen here: Birka Ear Spoon.

On one side you see a woman carrying a horn. Perhaps it is a Valkyrie who welcomes the dead warrior to Valhalla, but it could also be the goddess Freya herself. On the other side, a cat is depicted.

Ear spoons are small spoon-like tools that were used during the Viking Age and up to the late Middle Ages, and in some places, they were used as late as the 1800s to clean ears from earwax and other impurities. During the Viking Age, they seem to have been worn by women, often hanging from brooches. Most of the findings of ear spoons come from Birka and Gotland.

Made of bronze.
