These earrings are based on Viking-era belt fittings found in Fröjel on Gotland and Ströja, in Östergötland. Similar finds have also been made in other places in Sweden such as Birka but also in the Baltics, Finland and Russia. The fittings were in oriental style and made of both bronze and silver.
The original from Ströja was in silver and is now at the Historical Museum in Stockholm.  See: Heartshaped mount
