Needle cases were used to store sewing needles. During the Viking Age, sewing and embroidery were an important part of everyday life. It was mainly women who were responsible for sewing in the home, and the needle case therefore also became part of the female costume.
There are a large number of finds of needle cases, and this needle case is modeled after how they generally looked during the Viking Age. Examples of similar finds can be found, among others, from Nacka in Södermanland: Link to the original, and from Gotland: Link to the original.
The original was, like our replica, made of bronze. There is no lid, so the needle case was either closed with a tuft of wool, or the needles may have been wrapped in a piece of cloth.
